Bali Bird Park is
in a quiet part of Gianyar regency on the road to Ubud, so it’s just a
20 minute drive from Sanur and 40 minutes from Kuta, provided you don’t
get stuck in ceremony traffic.
Even if you’re
not an avid bird-lover, you’re bound to love the Bali Bird Park. But
those who aren’t too enthused with birds beware, because you are
guaranteed to get up close and personal with over 1000 birds
representing more than 250 species from all over the
world. This large variety of brightly coloured local and exotic birds
are spread over nearly five acres of well-maintainedtropical gardens.
Exploring the
park takes you through seven distinct regions. Birds from every corner
of the globe are housed in an environment that replicates their homeland
right down to local plant species. It’s a good idea to dedicate
at least half a day to the Bird Park so you have time to explore
everything, from the steamy jungles of Sumatra to the African Savannah. Plus there are various feeding times and shows throughout the day that you won’t want to miss.
The world’s rarest bird,
the Bali Starling, is an undeniable star of the exhibits. The Bali Bird
Park is a registered breeding partner of the conservation program,
helping to keep this endangered bird in the Bali skies and out of the
history books.
A number of birds are free to roam around the park, so as you wander you’ll be greeted bycassowaries, storks and pelicans.
But a highlight for many visitors is taking a well-earned break to
enjoy lunch surrounded by preening peacocks — their showmanship is
unrivalled. As far as dining is concerned, you’ve got a couple of choices: there’s the Rainforest Cafe for
a quick bite or the Bali Starling Restaurant to enjoy a range of local
and international dishes in lush tropical garden surrounds. Be
sure to pack you camera because there are plenty of photo opportunities
at the park. The friendly birds are more than willing to take a selfie
with you — you’d be a narcissist too if you were blessed with such
spectacular plumage!
